Twelve-day Switzerland gourmet dream vacation - Day 1-5
When I think of taking a tour offered by a travel agent, I think of all those enormous groups of people you see in every foreign city following the guide with the long umbrella, leading the way the next 3-minute dose of sights, culture and history. And what must they be eating? My blood runs cold at the thought of it. So - what if you could take a tour with just your family, or spouse, or some friends or a single friend? A tour that lets you travel with your own car and driver, stay at the best hotels and dine in all the best restaurants, and lets you experience the best that Switzerland has to offer. Well it's not a day dream, such a tour actually exists, and it can be scheduled at your convenience. We'll be featuring more culinary itineraries in months to come - here's a quick run-down of one that is already popular, put together by Virtuoso travel specialists.

    Day 1: Departure from US.

Day 2: Arrival, Zurich airport, transfer by private chauffeur-driven car to the Palace Hotel, Lucerne. Free time to rest and explore (the hotel is five minutes from Lucerne's old town and a ten-minute walk along the beautiful lake shore to the center of the city). Dinner at one of my favorite places, the Old Swiss House. The food is top notch.

Day 3: Morning walking tour of the city. Depart by car to Zug for lunch at the Restaurant Rathauskeller for a meal featuring the famous Zuger Roeteli - a kind of pink-fleshed lake trout native to the Zug lake. After lunch comes a leisurely visit to the Etter Kirsch distillery - don't forget to buy a bottle of one of their aged Kirsches which rival the best spirits produced anywhere. After your return to Lucerne you'll have the rest of the day to yourself. If you need a little something in the late afternoon go to the Heini pastry shop -- the best in Lucerne. For dinner try Galliker, with traditional Lucerne dishes - or stay in the hotel for a magnificent gastronomic dinner at the restaurant Mignon .

Day 4: After breakfast your car will take you to nearby Engelberg for a visit to its abbey and show dairy, which also houses a great cheese store. Lunch is at Mount Titlis - a short ride up to 10,000 feet on the revolving cable car to Restaurant Bam Bou. After lunch, there is an optional add-on cooking lesson with Chef Walter Mentner of the Hotel Montana, which will include an excellent dinner with the chef.

Day 5: Take the William Tell Express to Fluelen with lunch on the boat. At Fluelen, continue by train to Lugano and check into the Villa Principe Leopoldo, Lugano's best hotel. Before dinner explore the hotel's beautiful grounds or take a quick ride down to the town. Dinner will be at the Restaurant Sant'Abbondio in nearby Sorengo.
